Tempelhof Airport is five kilometers (three miles) from the city. A former military airfield it is now used more as air traffic has increased following unification. From Tempelhof airport it is easy to catch the U-Bahn (train) to the centre of the city as the station is adjacent to the terminal.
Schönefeld Airport is 24 kilometers (15 miles) from the city. Mainly used by East European and Russian airlines it is now taking more charter traffic. To reach the city centre a taxi can take you to the nearest S-Bahn (overland train) station, which connects to all parts of Berlin.
By Bus or Train
The public transportation system in Berlin (operated by the BVG) is very well developed and one can reach the countryside as well. Busses and trains commonly operate until after midnight. Selected bus and train lines run during the whole night.
Tickets can be purchased in busses from the driver or from vending machines at the train stations and tram stops.
Further information including special tickets for tourists can be found on the web pages of the BVG.
By Taxi
In Germany taxis always show a black and yellow sign with the letters "TAXI" and have the color of ivory. Their lighted sign can identify free taxis. They can easily be stopped by hand sign or can be called by phone.
The taximeter must be switched on for every trip and indicates the bill. A tip of 5 to 10 % of the amount is usual.
By Rental/own car
Of course one can explore Berlin by car. The parking situation in the center of Berlin is, as in all big cities, somewhere between strained and hopeless. Usually, heavier traffic jams are only during the rush hour, the other times the traffic runs almost free.
All major international car rental firms as well as many smaller local companies can be found in Berlin.
