You do not need a visa for Germany for business, personal visits or tourism if you are
- a citizen of the EU/EEA/EFTA
- a holder of a Diplomatic, Service or Special Passport from Chad, El Salvador, Ghana, Philippines, Thailand and Turkey
- a holder of a Diplomatic Passport from Bulgaria, India, Jamaica, Macedonia, Malawi, Marocco, Namibia, Pakistan, Peru, Romania, South Africa and Tunisia
- a citizen of a country listed below provided
American Samoa, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Guam, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macao, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, United States of America, Uruguay, Vatican, Christmas Island, Cocos Island, Cook Island, Hong Kong (SAR), Israel, Japan, Niue, Norway, Norfolk Island, Venezuela and Virgin Island (US).
You cannot stay longer than three months and you are not going to do any paid or self-employed work either.
Citizens of any country not mentioned above will need a visa to enter Germany.
Visa application requirements
Please note that only applications with all supporting documents as follows will be accepted.
Please note that in some cases further documents and guarantees might be required with your application.
- Completed application forms, duly signed by the applicant(s).
You must answer all the questions otherwise your application will not be accepted. In some cases more than one application form may have to be submitted.
- Recent passport photograph(s)
- Passport or official travel document accepted by all Schengen countries. Make sure it has a blank page for the visa sticker. Your travel document must be valid for at least three months longer than the expiry date of the visa you are applying for.
- Proof of the purpose of the visit:
- The following documents are required:
Visit to your family, relatives or friends: Declaration of Support signed by your German host (Verpflichtungserklärung), obtainable from your host's local Foreign Nationals Authority
- for tourism
Evidence of accommodation, e.g. provisional hotel reservation covering all of your stay in the Schengen countries
- for business
Recent official letter of invitation from your foreign business associate or host explaining in detail the nature and duration of stay applied for and whether it involves single, double or multiple entry and evidence of accommodation, e.g. confirmed hotel reservation.
- Evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay, e.g. recent bank statement, traveller cheques, credit cards (credit cards only with recent statement confirming credit limit. Please note that cash is not acceptable proof).
- Evidence of occupation/student status
Proof of your current occupation in the U.K. This could be an original letter from your employer, a solicitor, Company House or a Chamber of Commerce. If you are a student in the U.K. you might be asked to submit an original letter from your school or university confirming your status/attendance.
- Proof of health insurance (travel insurance or Carnet de Touriste) to cover the whole period of the visa's validity. If you are a spouse or widow of a EU citizen you can obtain form E 111 from any U.K. post office.
- a prepaid and self-addressed envelope for registered mail (special delivery) if you want your visa to be sent to your home address
On applying for your visa you might be required to show your travel arrangements (reservation of travel ticket) and on collecting your visa you might be required to show the original confirmation of your hotel reservation and your confirmed and/or non-transferable travel-ticket.
- Notice for minors: Minors (under 18 / under 19 (Austria)) applying for a visa, in addition to the above mentioned documents, must produce a recent original letter from their school, college, university and/or (Austria) declaration from their parents or legal guardian authorizing them to travel and stay in a Schengen country and appointing the person who will be responsible for them together with the passport of one of their parents. Parents applying on behalf of a child must provide some official form of identity (Passport or ID-card). Proof of parentage might also be needed.
Types of visa, cost and validity
Transit Visa: £7.00. Tourist Visa (up to 30 days): £14.00. Tourist Visa (more than 30 days): £24.00. Tourist Visa (one year): £34.00
Application to
Embassy, Consulate general or Honorary Consul. Travelers visiting just one Schengen country should apply to the Consulate of that country; travelers visiting more than one Schengen country should apply to the Consulate of the country chosen as the main destination or the country they will enter first (if they have no main destination).
